Navigating Clinical and Embedded Ethics Through a Pragmatist Lens

What can pragmatist ethics mean for clinical and embedded ethics? The connection between moral theory and its practical applications in embedded and clinical ethics is often underexplored. Yet, underlying meta-ethical assumptions about moral judgments, concepts, and principles significantly influence evaluations of ethical research, the scope of applied ethics projects, and their objectives. In this presentation, I will outline key elements of pragmatist ethics and their implications for applied ethics, particularly in embedded and clinical contexts. I will provide detailed examples from several research projects I’ve been involved in, such as delivering clinical ethics support for the “gender team” providing gender-affirmative care in the Netherlands. Additionally, I will discuss my current involvement in the 4D PICTURE project, which aims to redesign oncology care pathways using methodologies like metromapping, data mining of patient experiences, and risk prediction models. As Dewey famously stated: “Philosophy recovers itself when it ceases to be a device for dealing with the problems of philosophers and becomes a method, cultivated by philosophers, for dealing with the problems of men” (1917: 65).

Speaker: Dr Laura Hartman, Researcher and lecturer in medical ethics at the Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
