The PhD course ‘Biomedical ethics’ will be offered again in May and June 2026. This long-standing and much appreciated course aims to provide junior researchers in the domain of biomedical ethics and philosophy of healthcare with an overview of current topics, methods and approaches in this research field. The course is taught in English and open to all PhD students; when sufficient places are left ReMa students and postdocs are welcome as well.

Themes & teaching staff:
• Approaches & methods in biomedical ethics (prof.dr. Marianne Boenink (Radboudumc) & dr. Niek Kok (LUMC & Radboudumc)
• Research ethics (prof.dr. Martine de Vries (LUMC) & prof.dr. Rieke de Graaf (UUMC))
• Ethics of biomedical technology (dr. Anke Oerlemans (Radboudumc) & dr. Eline Bunnik (ErasmusMC))
• Clinical ethics support (dr. Els Maeckelberghe (UMC Groningen) & dr. Janine de Snoo (AmsterdamUMC))
• Health differences & justice (dr. Hafez Ishmaili M’hamdi (Maastricht UMC) & prof.dr. Marcel Verweij (Ethics Institute UU))

In view of the diversity of approaches used in research on these themes participants will be invited to reflect on the assumptions, advantages and limitations of various methods and approaches, and how to combine empirical and normative research. In this way the course aims to strengthen participants’ reflexivity when selecting and using specific methods and approaches, as well as when interpreting research results. Participants are asked to prepare for course days by reading key texts or articles. On the last course day participants present what insights they gained and which takeaways they expect to use in their own work.
