International webinar
Between freedom and safety. Measures used to regulate the movement and mobility of people with dementia living in residential care environments

Time: 24th of September 15-17 CET
Venue: online, Teams

Organized by Elleke Landeweer (University of Amsterdam) and Mark Schweda (University of Oldenburg)

People with dementia living in residential care are often restricted from leaving the specialized dementia care environments in order to protect them from harm. However, policies of locked doors are contested for limiting individual freedom of movement. These policies have triggered a debate on when and to what extent restricting the freedom of movement is morally legitimate and what is considered as good care. For our project The Use of Closed Doors in Dementia Wards. Comparing Cultural and Moral Perspectives as well as Contexts for Mutual Learning in a Cross-Border Region,[1] we investigated which interventions and strategies are used to mitigate the life-space mobility of people with dementia living in specialized dementia care environments in the Northern German and Dutch cross-border region as well as their underlying moral considerations.

In this webinar, we share findings from both sides of the border (Dr. Elleke Landeweer/ Kim Meilin Kulaczewski) and present two guest speakers. Dr. mr. Brenda Frederiks will discuss the juridical context of the Netherlands and Dr. Sebastian Ritzi will present philosophical-ethical perspectives on restrictive measures in dementia care.

[1] This study was conducted in partnership with the Cross Border Institute of Healthcare Systems and Prevention (CBI), Groningen/ Oldenburg, and funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony (MWK) as part of the Niedersachsen ‘Vorab’ Program (Grant Agreement No. ZN3831).
