What discussions about AI tell us about science (and the rest of our society)
Zeit: 08. November 2023, 12:00-13:30 Uhr
Ort: Online
Veranstalter: Institut für Ethik und Geschichte der Medizin der Universitätsmedizin Göttingen
AI ethics is a booming – so much so that some observers speak of an ‘ethics bubble’. As I will argue in my talk, next to rapid technological advances, the reasons for the wide ranging and intense interest in AI ethics include attempts by corporate players to avoid regulation, and to set policy agendas. This situation poses difficult questions for researchers in the field of AI, including those who explore AI’s ethical, social, and regulatory dimensions. Should and could we resist research agendas that are set under the influence of corporate interests? What questions that are currently not asked need to be answered, and how can this be achieved? I will end my talk by proposing three strategies to focus AI ethics debates on the needs and interests of people and the quest to reduce inequities across and within societies.
